The Raiders Rules

Two changes were written into the NFL rules at least partially in response to tactics used by the Raiders. With only 10 seconds remaining in a 1978 game and the Raiders trailing San Diego 20-14, quarterback Ken Stabler fumbled the ball forward when hit at the Chargers 24 yd line by Fred Dean. Running Back Pete Banaszak fumbled the ball forward to Raiders tight end Dave Casper, who then batted the ball toward the end zone, where he recovered the fumble for a touchdown that enabled the Raiders to win the game. By the next season, a rule prohibited such advances of fumbles.

Several Raiders, most notably wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff and Lester Hayes, made liberal use of "stick-um", a glue-like substance applied to hands and arms that helped them hold on to the ball. In 1981, the league outlawed the use of stick-um.
